About FOCUS ON THE WILD
Originally inspired in the Fens of Eastern England, my photographic interest has developed as a means of experiencing wild nature across Continents.
Many of my early shots were taken in Soham Nature Reserve in Cambridgeshire (UK) renowned for its ancient meadows and orchids. I then caught the Africa bug and have travelled and lived in Eastern and Southern Africa over the past 12 years, visiting and photographing many of the great reserves – including Etosha, Hwange, Okavango, Luangwa, Ruaha, Serengeti. More recently, my photographic expeditions have also included Asia, Europe and the Americas.
My interest in wildlife round the world has taken me to some places where I’ve been privileged to witness some amazing animal behaviour, and been able to capture it on camera. Flamingos dancing along the shores of Lake Nakuru in Kenya, tiger cubs playing in India, and an adult sparrow feeding a cuckoo chick in the Fens of the UK contrast with grizzly bears fishing in Alaska, and, most memorable of all, African Painted dogs conspiring with a crocodile to kill an impala in the Okavango in Botswana. These amazing sights, and others, are illustrated in the galleries.
Photography opens up wonderful opportunities to view the world, and its people in a way that regular visitors sometimes don’t experience. So I have been able to expand my interests into not just the wildlife, but also its environment and the people living near it. Increasingly I am conscious of the challenge of reconciling sustainable development with conservation, so I hope that my images offer some inspiration into how Nature and Man can move forward together into the 21st Century.
